I wrote my second book, Seasons and Festivals, when I was 5 years old. Seasons & Festivals showcases what a year looks like from my perspective. It follows the cycle of 5 Seasons in India (including the ‘Monsoon’ season) and key Festivals and Celebrations across the months.
The book is inspired by a unit of inquiry in school on ‘Celebrations’. Making the second book was a fun experience! This time, it took three months from start to finish. The idea, from conception to story to illustrations are all exclusively my work. My mom helped me go through personal photos and then I reflected on each month to string together the rhythms of a full year. I started with creating a planning sheet and kept ticking each part as I kept creating this book. This project helped widen my perspective as I recalled each season, festival and celebration.
The illustrations use a variety of mediums: Pencil colors (Faber-castell), Oil pastels (Camel) and Poster paints (Crayola). I also used stickers and some finger painting. There are ideas for other crafts done by me through the year – photos of these are depicted at the end of the book. The book has about 30 pages.
I wish for other children to get inspired to read lots of books and to reflect back on their year. I hope you have as much fun reading it, as I had in writing and making it!
